Resize an image to 1 MB — forums, marketplaces and content systems

Pick the limit a form or website gives you. The tool finds the largest, sharpest image that fits, on your device.

1 MB limits are set by sites that host user photos in volume: forums, classified-ad and marketplace listings, community galleries and older content management systems. The number is a storage decision rather than a quality one. A phone photo fits under 1 MB at a quality nobody can tell apart from the original; only very large camera files need to be scaled.

What to expect

A 12-megapixel phone photo typically fits at its full 4000-pixel width in high JPG quality, or close to it. A 24- or 45-megapixel camera file is scaled to about 3000 to 4000 pixels on the long side, which is still larger than a 4K screen. Screenshots of a full desktop fit as lossless PNG.

How to do it

  1. The 1 MB limit is preselected. Add the photo.
  2. Most photos fit on the first attempt; the size meter confirms it. Compare with the original if you like.
  3. Download. Nothing is cropped and the proportions are unchanged.

Questions about the 1 MB limit

Is 1 MB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?

This tool uses 1,000,000 bytes, the smaller of the two. A site that counts in 1,048,576-byte units accepts the file as well.

My photo was already 800 KB. What happened?

Nothing. When the original already fits the limit, the tool says so and offers the untouched file. Use "Shrink it anyway" if you want a smaller one.

Does the result keep EXIF data such as the camera model?

No. Camera metadata is not written into the result. Keep your original if you need it.
