500 KB is the limit where quality stops being a trade-off. Content systems, shop back-ends, newsletter tools and many email forms set it because a photo at this size still looks like the original on any screen, while being ten times lighter than a camera file. It is also a sensible target when you want to put several pictures in one message without hitting the recipient's mailbox limit.

What to expect

Most phone photos keep their screen resolution of around 2000 pixels on the long side and land at 400 to 500 KB in high JPG quality. Large camera files are scaled to about 2000 pixels, which is still wider than most laptop screens. Product photos on a white background compress particularly well and often stay at full size.

How to do it

  1. The 500 KB limit is preselected. Add the photo.
  2. The size meter shows the attempts; at this limit there are usually only one or two. Compare before and after.
  3. Download. To go smaller, pick another preset and the result is rebuilt in place.

Questions about the 500 KB limit

Why does a 24-megapixel camera photo get scaled down?

At full size even strong compression stays over 500 KB. The tool lowers quality to its minimum acceptable level first; when that is still too large it reduces the pixel size just enough. A 2000-pixel photo at high quality looks better than a 6000-pixel photo at the lowest quality.

Can I send the result by email directly?

Yes. The download is a normal JPG, WebP, AVIF or PNG file. Five photos at 500 KB stay under most 3 MB attachment limits.

Is anything uploaded to this site?

No. The photo is read and re-encoded in your browser.
